  27. <meta content="Despite criticism that Environmental Management Systems (EMSs)
  28. do not address social aspects, a review of the EMS implementation on
  29. Australian farms revealed that there were many social dimensions to the EMS.
  30. While these were not necessarily explicitly recognised by the farmers, certifiers
  31. and/or regulators, these social factors were very important to the ongoing
  32. commitment to, and operation of, the EMSs. Social factors enhance the
  33. operation of the EMS, reinforce initial motivations and have major benefits
  34. for the farm business. However, gaining recognition of these factors was
  35. difficult, measuring changes in social interactions not easily achievable and not
  36. well recognised or rewarded by outside stakeholders. The development of
  37. improved mechanisms for valuing social factors in agricultural contexts, better
  38. understanding of the roles of these factors amongst EMS certifiers and
  39. advisors, and more explicit acknowledgement of the importance of these
  40. factors on overall farm management is required." name="eprints.abstract" />

  282. do not address social aspects, a review of the EMS implementation on&#13;
  283. Australian farms revealed that there were many social dimensions to the EMS.&#13;
  284. While these were not necessarily explicitly recognised by the farmers, certifiers&#13;
  285. and/or regulators, these social factors were very important to the ongoing&#13;
  286. commitment to, and operation of, the EMSs. Social factors enhance the&#13;
  287. operation of the EMS, reinforce initial motivations and have major benefits&#13;
  288. for the farm business. However, gaining recognition of these factors was&#13;
  289. difficult, measuring changes in social interactions not easily achievable and not&#13;
  290. well recognised or rewarded by outside stakeholders. The development of&#13;
  291. improved mechanisms for valuing social factors in agricultural contexts, better&#13;
  292. understanding of the roles of these factors amongst EMS certifiers and&#13;
  293. advisors, and more explicit acknowledgement of the importance of these&#13;
